Practical Magic was released in 1998. The film focuses on two sisters who are witches and deal with a major problem that affects everyone in their lives. The film stars Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, Stockhard Channing, Dianne Wiest, Aidan Quinn, Evan Rachel Wood, Alexandra Artrip, Mark Fuerstein, Margo Martindale, Chloe Webb, and Gorin Visnjic. 

I thought Practical Magic was alright. It was not amazing, but it was not horrible either. It just fell in the middle. There were nice aspects. It felt like a Hallmark Movie to a degree. That is not a bad thing. I used to enjoy Hallmark Movies. I have not had the time to watch Hallmark movies in the past few years. When I have time to watch stuff, I am usually either watching a movie or catching up on a show on streaming. When the movie was released, I was eight years old. I was not aware of Practical Magic until years later. I saw parts of it on TV when flipping through channels. I didn’t know until a lot later that this was based on a book. I did have some interest in reading the book before learning there was a movie. 

Practical Magic has a good cast. Everyone does a good job in their roles. For me, this was a different kind of role for Nicole Kidman out of things I have seen her in. I had a conversation with someone who loved and recommended this movie. They described the movie as cozy. After watching it I agree with that terminology. The film does have a cozy quality to it. With that being said, the film felt kind of boring at times. I was not very invested in the characters or the love aspects of the film. I found a lot of the characters irritating. I was surprised how many characters I felt that way about. Normally it’s only a handful. 

The witchcraft was fun, but it felt a bit lacking at times. Cozy movies have a whimsy about them or something that feels a bit like magic. This movie did not do that for me. I am a fan of the genre. I enjoyed the show Charmed which also debuted in 1998. I was a big fan of The Vampire Diaries which included vampires, witches, and werewolves. I really enjoyed Agatha All Along from Marvel amongst many others. Charmed would maybe be the closest to being called cozy especially when watching it now. Charmed also was fairly action packed so it may not be able to fall into that specific category. 

The movie was not too long. It clocks in around one hundred and four minutes. If it had gone any longer, I feel it might have started to get difficult to watch. By the time it ended it felt like it ended at the right moment. 

My main reason for checking this out was because I did see the trailer for Practical Magic 2 and wanted to see it. This was a movie I had an interest in over time. I wanted to finally see it before the new movie. I still want to see the new one. I watched Charlie’s Angels before Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle. I did not like the first movie, but I enjoyed the second one. I also did not care for The Matrix, but I enjoyed The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions. There is a chance I could enjoy Practical Magic 2. 

Practical Magic was an alright movie that is nice and cozy and a bit boring. It has a good cast, and I am curious how Practical Magic 2 will play out especially since it is getting released about twenty-eight years after the first one.
