Poseidon was released in May 2006. It made around 60 million domestically and around 181 million worldwide. Poseidon is set on New Years Eve, and a rogue wave hits a thirteen deck, twenty story tall cruise ship where the passengers fight to survive. The film stars Josh Lucas, Kurt Russell, Emmy Rossum, Mike Vogel, Jacinda Barrett, Mia Maestro, Kevin Dillon, Jimmy Bennett, Freddy Rodriguez, Andre Braugher, and Richard Dreyfuss. 

Poseidon pleasantly surprised me. I did not have high expectations for the movie. I remember when it was released. I remember not being that excited for it at the time which is why I didn’t see it in theaters. I saw the movie in the library and figured why not? I thought Poseidon was a good disaster movie. It was action packed the whole time which actually caught me off guard. I was expecting there to be a little buildup before the main event.

Within fifteen minutes or so in is where the ship gets hit with the wave. It’s not like how it took a while until the Titanic hit the iceberg. It makes sense given the length of the Poseidon. I figured maybe the ship getting hit would take place within thirty minutes or so into the movie. Once the ship gets hit, it’s all chaos from there. The cast does a good job. The main players are likeable enough to help get invested in their fight to survive and to make it out alive. 

This happens to mark the twenty-year anniversary for the movie since it was released in May 2006. For a mid 2000s movie, it holds fairly well today. It does feel like a mid 2000s movie as well. I personally liked the 2000s but that was a pivotal time for me. The effects were impressive. While watching the movie it seemed that practical effects were used for the most part which made the scenes feel more authentic and believable. With disaster movies, I feel that is a key component to get invested in the ride. 

Poseidon is a solid disaster movie that has a simple plot and objective. It is action packed throughout and clocks in at a brisk pace of only about ninety-eight minutes.
