Supergirl Review

Credits: DC Studios

Kara Zor-El teams up with a young girl Ruthe to find Krem, who was responsible for hurting Kara’s dog Krypto, and is the only one who has the antidote to save him. The film stars Milly Alcock, Eve Ridley, Matthias Schoenaerts, Jason Momoa, David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, Imogen Turner, and David Corenswet.

I thought Supergirl was a good movie. As the second DCU movie, it’s solid. It does a good job expanding the universe. Supergirl is the first DCU movie to deal with space since Superman was primarily set on Earth. The next space adventure will be the TV show Lanterns which will balance between Earth and space. Supergirl is set after the events of Superman and tells the origin story of Supergirl. It was nice to get Supergirl’s story. There have not been many film iterations of Supergirl on the big screen. Helen Slater played Supergirl in her own movie back in the eighties. The last live action Supergirl was Melissa Benoist who starred on the TV show Supergirl which was part of the Arrowverse. We did see Sasha Calle as Supergirl in The Flash movie that came out a few years ago. The DCU version of Supergirl is different than a lot of the versions in the past. I found that refreshing to see Supergirl a little more messy than prior versions. It is a nice contradiction to Superman. Milly Alcock does a great job as Supergirl, and I am looking forward to seeing what else she does with the role going forward. The rest of the cast does a solid job. Supergirl has a smaller cast compared to Superman. I think the smaller scale works in its favor. Jason Momoa does a good job as Lobo. I think he fit the role well. It was fun to see him on screen wreaking havoc. I thought Eve Ridley did a good job as well as Ruthye. I am curious if we will see more of her in the future or if she is a one and done character. She had a good dynamic with Kara.

Supergirl is a fairly self-contained movie. Superman does appear in the movie which was revealed in the trailers. His role was appropriate to the story, and it did not take away from Supergirl. The heart of the story is Kara and Krypto’s relationship. Besides getting Kara’s origin story, the movie also provides a bit of Krypto’s origin story. Krypto is a fan favorite for many, and I am expecting to see more of him going forward. Krypto was just as enjoyable in this movie as he was in Superman.

Supergirl does some basic set up for the Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow but not as much as one would think. If there is more set up it is not yet obvious. The film does not have credit scenes at all. Once the movie ends, it is over.

Supergirl is a solid entry in the DCU Universe. It’s exciting to see where the story will go next. It has already been confirmed that Supergirl will have a larger role in Man of Tomorrow which will be out next year.
