Based on the popular 80s cartoon about a guy who returns home to his home world Eternia and faces the villain who took over his home world. The film stars Nicholas Galitzine, Camila Mendes, Idris Elba, Alison Brie, Johanes Haukur, Johannesson, Jon Xue Zhang, Charlotte Riley, James Purefoy, Morena Baccarin, Kristen Wiig, and Jared Leto.
I enjoyed Masters of the Universe. I thought it was fun. I never watched the cartoon, or anything related to He-Man. I was aware of He-Man and Skeletor. They have been referenced a lot online and through different movies and TV shows. The movie is a blast. The cast does a good job. The movie seems to embrace the premise. It doesn’t take itself too seriously and I think that makes it work. Nicholas Galitzine does a good job as Adam/He-Man. I found him very relatable. It was also nice to see Camila Mendes kicking butt. I have only seen Camila Mendes on Riverdale. It was nice to see her in a different project. I know there was controversy surrounding Jared Leto’s casting as Skeletor especially after the trailers came out and revealed the voice he dons for the role. After seeing the movie, I personally think Jared Leto did a great job. I did not find it distracting which was a slight concern I had prior to seeing the movie. Based on the trailers I wasn’t sure how seriously I could take Skeletor because of the voice. The movie makes it work and it doesn’t take itself too seriously. I found Skeletor enjoyable to watch on screen.
The movie has good action scenes. The movie is fairly action packed. I liked the colors that were used in the movie. It helped enhance everything on screen. Eternia is a cool place to visit and is nice escape for the summer. I saw the movie in IMAX, and I highly recommend it if possible. The music that was used was a lot of fun also.
I did think the movie was slightly too long. It is fast paced for the most part but there were a few brief times where it felt things were dragging. I feel a few minutes could have been cut. The movie clocks in around two hours and twenty minutes give or take.
There are three credit scenes which is a little unusual especially since this is not Marvel or DC. There are two mid-credit scenes and a post credit scene. There seems to be some ambition for future installments.
Masters of the Universe is a fun action packed movie perfect for the summer. It is a nice escape for a couple of hours. It will be interesting to see if this will become the start of a franchise.
