Project Hail Mary Review

Based on the bestselling book, science teacher Ryland Grace goes on a mission to space to help save the planet. The film stars Ryan Gosling, Sandra Huller, James Ortiz, Lionel Boyce, Priya Kansara, Malachi Kirby, Milana Vayntrub, and Ken Leung.

I thought Project Hail Mary was a good movie. It was enjoyable. I read the book prior to watching the movie. In fact, I had finished the book earlier the same day of seeing the movie. The movie is fairly faithful to the book. It nails the main parts. The book is 476 pages long so obviously not everything made it in the film. The movie really focuses on the relationship between Ryland Grace and the Eridian alien Rocky. Ryan Gosling really carries the film. This is a good role for him.

One thing that was nice about the movie was the fact that it was fairly uplifting. The basic premise is Earth has about thirty years left before the sun starts dying out and the world plummets into chaos. Despite a dire setup the movie does not go down a doom and gloom path. The book was the same way in terms of tone.

It was enjoyable to watch Ryland Grace and Rocky’s relationship. It captured many different emotions throughout the movie. Some moments were funny while others were dramatic and emotional.

For a movie that is predominantly a two man show which would be Ryan Gosling and the alien Rocky, it is quite enjoyable. The movie clocks in over two and half hours. With thirty minutes of ads and previews the movie clocks in over three hours. The movie moves at a fast pace. That is saying a lot given most of the movie is on two characters. There are flashback scenes like in the books to Ryland Grace’s life before he wound up in space.

Project Hail Mary is an enjoyable movie that is fun, funny, emotional, and intelligent. Ryan Gosling shines as does Rocky. It is a great addition to the sci-fi genre.
