Dune Review

Dune came out in 2021 and was released in theaters and on streaming simultaneously. It went on to gross over 100 million dollars domestically in theaters. The movie is based off the popular book series about a royal family who gets involved in a war while their son gets visions of a dark future. The movie stars Timothee Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Zendaya, Jason Momoa, Stellan Skarsgard, Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem, Dave Bautista, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Chang Chen, and Charlotte Rampling.

I was interested in seeing Dune but didn’t get around to it at the time of its release. I had no intention of getting HBO MAX and I wasn’t really going to movie theaters at that point. I was only watching select movies on the big screen. I finally got to see Dune and I thought it was interesting. I never read the books, so I am unable to compare the movie to the books. I also never saw the original movie either so I cannot compare this to the original movie. I have seen the marketing for Dune Part Two and was aware that certain characters probably didn’t survive the first movie based on who is in Part Two. I thought the cast did a good job. The movie is a slow burn. There are action scenes, but it spends a lot of time setting up the premise and the characters. Based on the marketing, it seems Part Two will be more action packed.

I thought Dune was a little too long. There were some parts where it seemed a bit slow. Dune also seems like a movie that would be better appreciated over multiple viewings overtime. It is a unique world, and I would like to see more of it.

I thought Dune was an interesting movie. It is unique for the genre. It has a solid cast and does a good job setting up the plot and its characters. I am curious to see how Part Two plays out and where the story goes next.

  1. I saw the 1984 version on the big screen. It was spectacular, in my opinion. I had not read the book yet. So, I did not know what to expect. But it was a memorable experience that motivated me to get the book. That spoiled the movie for me. I’m watching this newer version, and it’s pretty slow and cumbersome. Difficult to follow in some places. But the sets are beautiful, if not overwhelmingly sandy & dusty. This is as the author wanted, but it makes it even more challenging to follow in some places. When I searched, I found multiple versions of Dune online—lots to explore in this Dune-averse.
