Something Borrowed Review

Something Borrowed was released in 2011. It is about a woman named Rachel who falls for her best friend Darcy’s fiancé Dex. The film stars Ginifer Goodwin, Kate Hudson, Colin Egglesfield, John Krasinski, Steve Howey, and Ashley Williams.

I enjoyed Something Borrowed. It was an enjoyable movie. I was invested in the plot and I wanted to see how everything would play out. Ginifer Goodwin and Colin Egglesfield have good chemistry. Kate Hudson did a good job as Darcy. Rachel and Dex seemed more compatible from the beginning. Flashback scenes showed how Rachel and Dex met as well as when Dex and Darcy first met. I liked the use of flashbacks in the movie. I feel like there are not many flashbacks in romantic comedies. The flashbacks in this seemed more like they would be in This is Us or a show of that nature. I thought it helped give some more context to the relationships with Rachel, Dex, and Darcy. The film falls under romance, comedy, and drama which makes a little more sense that the use of flashbacks would be in this. I am not saying flashbacks are never in romantic comedies, they are not commonly in them out of the ones I have seen. I have seen a fair amount over the years. The way the flashbacks are used in this are usually in dramas or character pieces.

There are two things that confused me. I was confused how Darcy and Dex became a couple to begin with. There was a flashback that revealed how they got together. What confused me was what did they see in each other? It was something I was wondering throughout the movie. I was thinking to myself “how are they together?” and “What does he see in her?” Rachel and Dex seemed a better fit and the flashbacks helped show that.

The other thing that confused me was the movie has a midcredits scene. What confused me was the scene itself. After the scene ends on the screen it says “To Be Continued.” I don’t know if it was meant as a joke or if there was hope of making a sequel. Non MCU films and franchises have had credit scenes from time to time. Usually if it is the case, it is a funny scene or gives an answer to a lingering question. I have not seen a movie that says To Be Continued after a credit scene however Marvel usually will have something along the lines of so and so will return. It is not a big deal, it was just something that I found interesting. If they did not include “To Be Continued” I would not have thought anything of it.

Something Borrowed is a fun movie and has a good cast. Even though, I don’t think there was any intention to make a sequel, if they did I would not mind.
