Set more than thirty years after the original movies, a new group of friends have a secret they cover up and are terrorized by a killer with a fisherman’s hook. The movie stars Madelyn, Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Jonah Hauer-King, Tyriq Withers, Sarah Pidgeon, Billy Campbell, Austin Nichols, Freddie Prince Jr., and Jenifer Love Hewitt.
I thought I Know What You Did Last Summer was alright. It was not wonderful, but it was not terrible. I saw the original films many years ago. I don’t remember them that well. I recall enjoying the movies when I had seen them. The cast does a good job. It’s a slasher film that succeeds in the genre. Slasher films are usually about the kills more than their plots. The plot here was pretty basic. It was fairly similar to the premise of the prior films just with a new group of characters. Since it is a legacy sequel as well as a reboot, the film acknowledges the history that took place in the late 1990s when the original was released. Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prince Jr. are in the movie as the two surviving characters from the original films. They have decent size roles, but they are secondary to the core group of characters.
It will be interesting to see where the cast goes from here in terms of careers. The original had some big names including Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillippe as well as Brandy for the sequel. Everyone played their parts well.
The movie is a good length. It did not drag on. It knew when to end. The killer reveal had some nice little twists, but it was not the most memorable compared to other reveals. It was pretty middle of the line if it were to be ranked amongst greatest killer reveals for slasher films.
There is a mid-credit scene that seems to set up a potential sequel. It will be interesting if there will be any other installments going further or if this will be it.
I Know What You Did Last Summer is a decent sequel/reboot of a late 90s slasher movie. It is pretty run of the mill but offers some good entertainment for the summer.
