Superman Review

Credits: DC Studios

Superman officially kicks off the DCU and sees Superman facing his greatest enemy, Lex Luthor. The film stars David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Maria Gabriela de Faria, Edi Gathegi, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Anthony Carrigan, Sara Sampaio, Skyler Gisondo, and Alan Tudyk.

I thought Superman was awesome. It is a great kickoff to the DCU. I was never the biggest fan of Superman. Growing up, I was a huge Batman fan. The only Superman movies I have seen were Superman Returns and Man of Steel. I never saw the Christopher Reeve films, and I never watched the animated movies or shows. I watched Smallville when that came out, which was a prequel of how Clark Kent became Superman.  That lasted ten seasons, and Clark did not officially become Superman until the end of the series. I really enjoyed Superman. I think James Gunn has done a great job with launching the DCU. This is the first movie to kick off the DCU. The animated show, Creature Commandos, which was released at the end of last year, officially kicked off the world.

The cast is stellar. David Corenswet does a really great job as both Clark Kent and Superman. Rachel Brosnahan makes a terrific Lois Lane. They have great chemistry together. A major standout for me is Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. I have seen Nicholas Hoult in different projects throughout the years including the X-Men prequel films where he played Beast. Nicholas Hoult does a fantastic job as Lex Luthor, and I think he is one of the best Lex Luthors alongside Michael Rosenbaum who played the role in Smallville. The rest of the cast is great as well.

James Gunn does a great job launching a universe as well as juggling a huge ensemble. I am not surprised given his work with the Guardians of the Galaxy films for Marvel. Superman has a lot of heart, and it is bright compared to Man of Steel which was a lot darker.

The music fits the movie well. I like what James Gunn has done with the Superman theme. The movie has a good story. It is not overly complicated. The movie works well as a stand-alone movie even though it is used to set up a bigger universe.

There are two credit scenes. There is one in the middle and one at the very end.

Superman is a great launch of the new DC Universe under James Gunn and Peter Safran. It has a stellar cast and is all around an awesome superhero movie. I am excited to see these characters again and I am looking forward to seeing what the DCU universe has in store next.
