The Covenant Review

The Covenant was released in theaters in the fall of 2006. It made around 23 million in the US. It’s a supernatural movie about four young men with one of them getting ready to ascend to gain full power on their eighteenth birthday. A new person comes to town seeking to gain that power. The movie stars Steven Strait, Sebastian Stan, Toby Hemingway, Taylor Kitsch, Chace Crawford, Laura Ramsey, Jessica Lucas, Kyle Schmid, Wendy Crewson, and Stephen McHattie.

The Covenant was an alright movie. When the movie was released, it bombed when it came out. It is also very hard to find. It is not currently on any streaming services. I had to rent it from Amazon Prime. The Covenant is not terrible, but it was just mediocre. It felt very much of the time that it was released. The soundtrack is full of rock music which seemed to be a big part of the horror/supernatural genre for many years. It seemed more prevalent at that time. The appeal of the movie is supposed to be the fact the main characters have powers. There is an eventual showdown at the end of the movie between the lead and the antagonist. That felt underwhelming compared to numerous other movies and television shows. The movie may be a bit dated since it has been almost eighteen years since the film was released, but the action scenes did not do much. The Matrix and X-Men and Spider-Man still have impressive actions scenes despite the age of those films which came out before The Covenant. There seemed to be a bit of a lackluster quality with this movie.

The cast does a good job with what they have. Really the stars are Steven Strait as Caleb Danvers and Sebastian Stan as Chase Collins. Caleb is nearing his eighteenth birthday and is about to ascend to get ultimate power which is what Chase is after. The rest of the cast was just kind of there. Caleb has a group of friends who also have powers which include Taylor Kitsch, Chace Crawford, and Toby Hemingway. The rest of them were just there. Taylor Ktisch was given a little to do but not much. The focus was mostly on Caleb. Chace Crawford was barely in the movie which I was surprised about. It seemed like the four of them would be predominantly in the movie. There was a portion of the movie where Sebastian Stan was not in it. It seemed he had more to do than the others. The Covenant came out before some of the cast went on to other things. The following year Chace Crawford went on to star as Nate Archibald in Gossip Girl. Sebastian Stan also had a recurring role on Gossip Girl and went on to join the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) as Bucky Barnes aka The Winter Soldier. Jessica Lucas, who had a small role in this went on to star in the later seasons of the television show The Resident. Taylor Kitsch went on to star in the TV show Friday Night Lights.

The Covenant clocks in a little over ninety minutes. It is about ninety-seven minutes. Even at that length the movie felt a little long. The soundtrack was alright but that could not help make the movie more interesting. The movie is pretty bland. It isn’t horrible but it’s nothing special either. It seemed a lot of the cast was fairly wasted. There could have been a lot more done with the other characters to make things a little more exciting.

The Covenant is a mediocre movie that is nothing special. It isn’t horrible but it’s not great and there have been other mediocre movies that have been a little more interesting. The movie is pretty hollow on all fronts and some of the story elements didn’t make the most sense even for this type of movie.
