Hollywood Homicide was released in the summer of 2003 and made around 30 million domestically. It is about two LAPD detectives who investigate the murder of an up-and-coming rap group. The movie stars Harrison Ford, Josh Hartnett, Isaiah Washington, Lena Olin, Bruce Greenwood, Keith David, Lolita Davidovich, Master P, Lou Diamond Phillips, Tom Todoroff, Meredith Scott Lynn, Dwight Yoakam, Gladys Knight, and Martin Landau.
Hollywood Homicide bombed when it was released in theaters. Worldwide it only made about 51 million. I am not that surprised it didn’t do well. At the time of its release it opened against some heavy hitters including Finding Nemo, 2 Fast 2 Furious, and Bruce Almighty amongst others. I thought the movie was okay. It was not horrible, but it wasn’t great either. It was kind of boring. Hollywood Homicide is an action comedy, and I didn’t find it very funny. There also wasn’t that much action for this type of movie either. The action scenes were typical and boring at best. The movie felt a bit too long. It clocks in a few minutes shy of two hours.
The cast does a good job but there weren’t any stand out performances. Harrison Ford and Josh Hartnett played their roles fine. However, I wasn’t that invested in their dynamic. Their characters have several differences including age and personality. That didn’t do much to make the movie more appealing or at least fun. At the time of this release, Josh Hartnett was in a decent number of movies while Harrison Ford was a big star coming off years of multiple hit movies including Star Wars and Indiana Jones. Besides being a detective, Harrison Ford’s character Sgt, Joe Gavilan is also a real estate broker while Josh Hartnett’s character Detective K.C. Calden is an aspiring actor. Those details didn’t add anything to the movie. They were neither funny nor enjoyable. They just made the movie feel longer.
There have been many buddy cop movies over the years and there have been more since this was released. This one just didn’t do anything to add to the genre. Even if the premise is fairly thin or predictable, the magic is usually the pairing of the two drastically partners. This just did not have any magic with Harrison Ford and Josh Hartnett.
Hollywood Homicide is an alright movie that is fairly boring and slightly too long. It is not an awful movie, but it is nothing fun or enjoyable either. It just feels like it’s there. It’s bleh at most and it makes sense why this did not do well in theaters.
