Madame Web is the origin story of Cassandra Webb who is a paramedic who gets the ability to see the future. The film stars Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced, Celeste O’Connor, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps, Emma Roberts, and Adam Scott.
I think Madame Web is good for what it is. I did not have high expectations for the movie. To be honest, when I saw the first trailer, I was not that excited for the movie. I knew I was going to see it, but it was not a movie that I was stoked to see. I had low expectations going in. Also, because it is from Sony, I knew not to expect much. Sony has had mixed results with their Spider-verse. A lot of their films have not really led to anything, so I knew not to expect much with Madame Web. The movie itself is alright. I think it worked well as a standalone movie. It does not really set up a bigger picture. It does set up for a potential sequel but that is about it. The movie felt like a throwback to the superhero movies that came out in the 2000s before the Marvel Cinematic Universe formed. I think that worked for the movie.
The cast does a good job. Dakota Johnson is good as Madame Web. She doesn’t give an amazing performance, but she does a good job with what she has. I think the movie has an interesting approach with how they deal with Madame Web getting her abilities to see the future. I thought that worked well for the movie.
Madame Web clocks in at two hours. I think that is a good length. Anything longer would have started to feel a bit too much. There is not a lot of action in the movie. That was an interesting choice. The main action sequence is at the end of the film for the final showdown. There are some smaller action pieces in the movie, but it’s spread out throughout the film.
Madame Web is good for what it is. It is not anything special, but it is not anything terrible either. It is a bit of a throwback to the genre before cinematic universes were a thing. It also takes a unique approach to Madame Web’s origin story.
