Mean Girls Review

Mean Girls is based on the Broadway Musical that was based off the original movie that was released in 2004. The movie stars Angourie Rice, Renee Rapp, Auli’i Cravalho, Jaquel Spivey, Avantika, Bebe Wood, Christopher Briney, Jenna Fischer, Busy Phillipps, Tina Fey, & Tim Meadows.

I enjoyed Mean Girls. I think what elevates the movie from being a carbon copy from the original is the music. The movie follows a lot of the same beats from the original movie. There are some differences, and this version has been updated to fit today’s world. The use of social media is a lot more present in this than it was back in 2004. Social media is a lot more present now than in everyday life than it was in 2004. The cast does a good job. Renee Rapp is a standout as Regina George. She really owns the role and is a scene stealer. I enjoyed all of her songs. Angourie Rice did a good job as Cady Heron.

The best songs for me were Regina’s songs. I enjoyed all of the songs, but her songs really stood out to me, especially the song World Burn. I would have liked to have seen more songs from Regina. The songs were enjoyable; however, it would have been nice if there was a bit more diversity with the music in terms of style. One thing I noticed was this version seems a bit watered down compared to the origniial movie. The original was a biting satire. It had a nastiness that helped make the movie feel fresh. This movie was not as nasty which is not necessarily a bad thing. Given the title is Mean Girls, it felt a little tame. Regina George did not seem as nasty compared to the original. I also know high school is a lot different now than it was back then. If this version was a little nastier, I feel the songs could have been a little more varied in style. There could have been some nastier rock pop songs or haunting ballads.

There also is a scene at the very of the credits. Credit scenes are not just limited to Marvel or franchises.

Mean Girls is a solid fun movie with good music. The music aspect helps lift the movie from being a complete remake of the original. The cast does a solid job, and the movie maintains the message from the original.
