Two people go on one date and they are reunited at a friend’s wedding. The movie stars Sydney Sweeney, Glen Powell, Alexandra Shipp, Hadley Robinson, GaTa, Dermot Mulraney, Rachel Griffiths, Charlee Fraser, Joe Davidson, Darren Barnet, Bryan Brown, and Michelle Hurd.
Anyone But You was alright. It wasn’t terrible but it wasn’t wonderful either. It is pretty formulaic for a romantic comedy. This genre has always been hit or miss with me. Some films are really good, and others are just okay. A lot rides on the chemistry of the leads. That is where Anything But You falls into the bleh category. Glen Powell is great, but Sydney Sweeney’s character was a bit annoying. Glen Powell has a tendency to play really charming guys even if they come across as jerks as seen in Scream Queens and Top Gun: Maverick. His character Ben is not really a jerk, but Glen Powell has a way of making a lot of his characters likeable in some way shape or form. Sydney Sweeney as Bea was annoying. Bea was not the most likeable and that kind of hindered the plot a bit. I also found it a little tough to route for them as a couple. That is the main ingredient of any romantic comedy.
The rest of the cast does a solid job with what they have. Daren Barnet plays Jonathan who is Bea’s ex. I would have liked to have seen more screentime for him. He did not have much to do. Most of the film centers on Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney. They were a couple that was hard to route for. It just really sticks out as a sore thumb of the movie. The film is predominantly set in Australia since that is where the wedding takes place. It had nice scenery.
Anyone But You is an alright movie. It had some funny moments but there were not many. Glen Powell helped make the movie tolerable and that is a testament to his likeability. Anyone But You falls under the typical romantic comedies that are just bleh and not that fun.
