Funhouse came out October 28th, 2008, and was a smash hit. It has sold over 7 million copies worldwide. It spawned multiple hit singles including So What which went number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and Sober and Please Don’t Leave Me which peaked in the top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Funhouse came out while Katy Perry and Lada Gaga had explosive debuts. Funhouse also came out during big years for Rihanna and Britney Spears. By this point in time, Funhouse was P!nk’s fifth album following I’m Not Dead. Compared to her peers, P!nk was always different than Beyonce, Britney, & Christina Aguilera as well as Jessica Simpson who came out around the same time. P!nk has had many hits prior, but Funhouse seemed to be able to really take things to the next level. So What was P!nk’s first solo number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Lady Marmalade, which hit number 1, has widely been considered a Christina Aguilera song which features P!nk as well as Mya, and Lil Kim. The song was for the Moulin Rouge! soundtrack. P!nk’s debut album did well but was sonically more R&B and drastically different than her other albums. Missundaztood was the first album to really showcase what P!nk was all about with her sassy hit songs such as Get the Party Started and her aching ballads such as Family Portrait and Just Like a Pill. Her previous album I’m Not Dead had two major hits with Who Knew and U + Ur Hand while Stupid Girls was the lead single off that album. Out of the three, Who Knew and U + Ur Hand were the bigger hits.
So What is one of P!nk’s best songs out of her whole catalogue and is now considered a classic. It was relatable and is a fun sassy song and a good kiss off song to an ex. The song had a memorable music video and it came at the height of P!nk’s breakup with her ex who even cameoed in the video. They have since reconciled and have a family together. In some ways So What feels like it was a game changer for P!nk and where her career would go. P!nk was able to get several more number ones later on in her career. Sober and Please Don’t Leave Me also had really strong radio presence as did So What.
Funhouse is a solid and versatile album that mixes different styles while showing a side of vulnerability. So What is the fun, loud, pop rock song that lyrically is honest and a bit raw. Sober and Please Don’t Leave Me also show different sides of vulnerability and honesty. Beyond the singles, Funhouse has a lot of solid songs. Glitter in the Air is a popular track partly due to P!nk’s Grammy Performance which is a fan favorite. Funhouse, the title track is a fun apocalyptic type song with lyrics such as “This used to be a funhouse, now its filled with evil clowns.” I Don’t Believe is another beautiful ballad while Mean feels like a country song. Ave Mary A is unique song that blends different styles and is lyrically very deep.
P!nk has had a hugely successful career over her many years and has done it on her terms. Funhouse really showcases the many sides of P!nk. This would continue on to later albums. Funhouse is a fun and memorable album to revisit.
