Blue Beetle Review

Blue Beetle is based on the DC comics and is about Jaime Reyes who gets chosen by an alien scarab and becomes the hero Blue Beetle. The movie stars Xolo Mariduena, Bruna Marquezine, Damian Alcazar, George Lopez, Adriana Barraza, Belissa Escobedo, Elpidia Carrillo, Becky G, Raoul Max Trijillo, Harvey Guillen, and Susan Sarandon.

I enjoyed Blue Beetle. It is a good solid movie. The cast does a great job and I think Xolo Mariduena who plays Jaime Reyes has a bright future ahead of him. What makes the movie different from other superhero movies is the family dynamic. I like that the family is involved from the beginning. The heart of the movie is Jaime’s family. The movie is a good length. It clocks in a little over two hours. It’s not too long and it’s not too short. It’s just right. There are a few references generically to a bigger world, but it is a standalone movie for the most part. The trailers had already referenced Batman. There are a few other superheroes who are mentioned briefly. The movie works on its own and it would be easy to integrate this into James Gunn’s DCU.

The movie is a lot of fun and it can get intense at times and emotional which I was not expecting. The movie has a midcredit scene and a post credit scene.

Blue Beetle is a fun action movie that has a lot of heart and a great family dynamic. I am hopeful that the character will return and that there will be more adventures for Blue Beetle and his family.
