In honor of The Flash ending on Wednesday May 24^th, here is a look at Eobard Thawne aka Reverse Flash’s journey. MASSIVE SPOILERS.

Eobard Thawne is also known as Reverse Flash and has been the main villain of The Flash for the duration of the show. Eobard Thawne has been played by both Matt Letscher and Tom Cavanagh. Eobard Thawne killed Barry Allen’s (Grant Gustin) mother, Nora Allen (Michelle Harrison) when he was a child. Eobard eventually killed Harrison Wells (Tom Cavanagh) and assumed his identity. During season 1 Harrison Wells was in a wheelchair. It was revealed during the season that the real Harrison Wells died, and it was really Eobard Thawne who mentored Barry, Cisco Ramone (Carlos Valdes) and Caitlyn Snow (Danielle Panabaker). Wells was responsible for the explosion of the Particle Accelerator which is what led to the death of Ronnie Raymond (Robbie Amell) Caitlyn’s boyfriend and put Barry into a coma after getting struck by lightning. When Barry woke up from his coma, he had speedster abilities which is what Wells wanted. Also, Ronnie Raymond was actually alive and was one half of Firestorm along with Martin Stein (Victor Garber).

Eddie Thawne (Rick Cosnett) who was a descendant of Eobard, killed himself in order to erase Reverse Flash from the timeline in the season 1 finale. It didn’t last as Reverse Flash kept playing a role on the series between Eobard’s true form and Eobard as Wells. Eobard played a role on DC’s Legends of Tomorrow where he formed the Legion of Doom with Malcolm Merlin (John Barrowman), Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller), and Damien Darkh (Neil McDonough) in season 2. They were after the Spear of Destiny. They got it temporarily and were able to rewrite their destinies. They were defeated by the Legends. At the end of season 2 of The Flash Barry went back in time to save his mother’s life and lived in an alternate timeline where he was living with his mother and father, Henry Allen (John Wesley Shipp). After a few months of living in the alternate timeline Barry realized it was time to set the timeline right and he and Eobard teamed up to set things back to the way they were. Flashpoint was created and created a new timeline that had its own repercussions once Nora Allen was killed again.

Eobard as Wells played a role in Crisis on Earth-X. He worked alongside Earth-X nazis the Dark Arrow (Stephen Amell) and Overgirl (Melissa Benoist), the evil counterparts of The Green Arrow and Supergirl. They were defeated by The Green Arrow, Supergirl, Team Flash, and The Legends.

At the end of season 4, Nora West Allen (Jessica Parker Kennedy) revealed herself to be the future daughter of Barry and Iris (Candice Patton). In season 5 it was revealed that Nora was from 2049 and that she was being mentored by Eobard Thawne with Harrison Wells’ face. He was in prison and was sentenced to death. Nora was a pawn in his plan, and he escaped from being executed. He faced off with Barry again told him he would see him again in the next crisis.

In season 7 Thawne as Wells faced off with The Flash and was defeated yet again. In season 8 a good Eobard Thawne had found happiness with a woman Dr. Meena Dhawan (Kausar Mohammed) who was the speedster Fast Track. who became a speedster. He teamed up with Barry to help on Team Flash’s mission. Tragedy struck when Eobard was taken over by the bad Thawne as Wells and he literally ripped Eobard’s face off to reveal Wells’ face. He was defeated once again.

Eobard appeared in the current season. It has been announced that Tom Cavanagh will reprise his role as Reverse Flash in the series finale. It is not known yet if both of them will appear or just Wells. Eobard Thawne is The Flash’s greatest enemy and has been the most consistent appearing in multiple seasons. It will be interesting to see how Thawne factors into the series finale and if he will finally be defeated once and for all.
