Demi Lovato’s fourth album Demi was released on May 10th, 2013. It followed her third album Unbroken which featured her first top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, Skyscraper. It was her comeback song after her personal troubles which led to the end of her hit Disney Channel show Sonny with a Chance. The rest of the cast did a new season that got rebranded as So Random! Skyscraper was just the start of Demi Lovato’s musical comeback as Give Your Heart a Break went on to be an even bigger hit.
The lead single off of Demi is Heart Attack which peaked at number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. Demi went on to have four singles. Made in the USA peaked at number 80 and was not that successful compared to Heart Attack. Neon Lights and Really Don’t Care which features Cher Lloyd had better chart success and fared well on radio. Heart Attack was the biggest radio hit off the album. Demi really showcased Demi Lovato’s vocal range and it helped make Demi Lovato a big pop star. Out of the three Disney Stars, Demi Lovato, Miley Cyrus, and Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato was a bit overshadowed in both mediums. Demi Lovat’s first two albums did well chart wise but did not have any break out singles that dominated the charts or radio. Miley Cyrus had several hits during her Disney days as did Selena Gomez. Demi Lovato’s Disney show only lasted two seasons while Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez’s respective shows each had four seasons, hit 100 episodes, and had proper endings. Sonny with a Chance did not have a proper series finale since the plan was to have a third season before Demi Lovato exited the series. Once Demi Lovato was off Disney, it seemed her music career started really taking off with her comeback single Skyscraper.
Demi came out at a time when Demi Lovato was entering adulthood. 2013 also marked a turning point for Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez who also released new albums. All three albums came at a transitional period. All three pop stars were turning 21 that year. Demi really showcased Demi Lovato’s vocals and a new maturity that started out on her last album Unbroken. Heart Attack was a massive hit with its soaring vocals and rock vibes. Recently Demi Lovato released a rock version of Heart Attack in honor of its 10year anniversary. Made in the USA is a fun pop song that did not find much success on the chart or radio. When the song came out there were a lot of comparisons to Miley Cyrus’ song Party in the USA which is an iconic song for Miley. I think the comparisons mostly stemmed from the fact the song is called Made in the USA. Other than similar titles, Made in the USA does not sound anything like Party in the USA. Neon Lights fared much better on the chart and radio. It peaked at number 36 on the Billboard Hot 100 and veered into new territory for Demi Lovato. Neon Lights was Demi’s first song that had EDM touches. By this point in time EDM had been around for a few years. Even with the EDM flare, it still showcased Demi’s vocals. Really Don’t Care features Cher Lloyd who had the breakout hit Want You Back that was released the prior year. Really Don’t Care is a sassy pop song with a message. It also slowly pushed Demi Lovato into more adult territory language wise. Subsequent albums went on to be explicit. Demi, the album actually marks the last non explicit album from Demi Lovato. Really Don’t Care peeked at number 26 on the Billboard Hot 100 and did well on radio. There was speculation that the ballad Nightingale was going to become a fifth single but that wound up not happening. It did not chart and was not played on radio. Nightingale has a classic sound. The rest of the album is full of great tracks. Something That We’re Not is another sassy song. The album kicks off with Heart Attack and closes with Warrior which Demi Lovato stated is a sequel to Skyscraper. Warrior is a popular track amongst the fans and is a beautiful ballad with a positive message.
Demi, the album is turning 10 years old. The album is just as good now as it was when it first came out. The album has a good mix of songs and styles while showcasing Demi Lovato’s vocals on every song. Also, Demi Lovato wrote a fair amount of the album which I think worked in her favor. The album succeeds in exploring different styles while remaining true to Demi Lovato as an artist. Demi continued to explore with different sounds on later albums and was featured prominently on multiple dance hits. The Demi album helped continue Demi Lovato’s success in music. 2013 was a big year for Demi as well as Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez. For the first time all three Disney stars were on the charts and on radio at the same time, proving once again that Disney knows how to find stars.
