In honor of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which opens on Friday May 5^th, here is a look at the journey of Mantis.

Mantis was first introduced in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Mantis is an empath who can feel others’ emotions. She works for Ego (Kurt Russell) when she first meets Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax (Dave Bautista), Rocket (Bradley Coooer) and Baby Groot (Vin Diesel). She and Drax bond and develop a unique friendship. Mantis joins the Guardians of the Galaxy and is instrumental in helping them stop Ego, a powerful celestial from destroying the galaxy by using her powers to put him to sleep.

In Avengers: Infinity War Mantis, along with Star-Lord, Drax, and Nebula (Karen Gillan) fight Thanos (Josh Brolin) with Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), and Spider-Man (Tom Holland). Mantis is able to subdue Thanos with her empathic powers. In a fit of rage after learning that Thanos killed Gamora, Star-Lord loses his cool and attacks Thanos just as the heroes are about to remove the gauntlet from Thanos. Thanos regains control and is later given the Time Stone from Doctor Strange. Thanos heads to Wakanda to retrieve the final stone. After succeeding in achieving all the Infinity Stones, Thanos succeeds in wiping out half of the universe. Mantis, along with Star-Lord, Drax, Doctor Strange, and Spider-Man are blipped out of existence.

In Avengers: Endgame Mantis is brought back along with the other heroes after the Avengers are able to create their own gauntlet with Infinity Stones that they had got by time traveling to periods before Thanos got the stones. Mantis helps the other heroes fight Thanos and his army in the final battle.

In Thor: Love and Thunder Mantis along with the other Guardians say goodbye to Thor (Chris Hemsworth) who heads off on his own adventure.

Mantis gets a shining moment alongside Drax in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special where it is revealed that Mantis is Star-Lord’s sister, Ego is their father. Mantis and Drax go to Earth to kidnap Kevin Bacon as a Christmas present for Star-Lord in hopes of cheering him up. Star-Lord continues to mourn Gamora. While Kevin Bacon runs away, Mantis and Drax face the police. Mantis is able to use her powers to calm Kevin Bacon down and they bring him to Space to meet Star-Lord.

Where will Mantis’ journey take her in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3? I would think a big plot development would be the fact that Mantis and Star-Lord are siblings. Will Mantis survive the movie? I think out of all of the Guardians, Mantis has a good shot of surviving. Unlike the rest of the team, audiences have spent less time with Mantis since she was introduced in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Everyone else was introduced in the first movie. Since there has been less time with Mantis, there may be more of a future for her. It may be more impactful for one of the other Guardians to be killed off since the audience has had more time to get to know the other members. Whatever happens with Mantis, I am excited to see what’s in store for her in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
