Walker is currently in its third season and is awaiting news of renewal. The CW has not renewed any of their shows except for All American. At this point, no show is really a safe bet for the CW since being purchased by Nextstar. Nextstar wants to focus more on sports than scripted shows. Walker is in an interesting situation. Walker spawned a franchise last fall when the prequel series Walker Independence premiered. That is also waiting news about its fate. Both shows are westerns. The main difference is that Walker Independence is set in the 1800s whereas Walker is set in the present day making it a modern western. Jared Padalecki stars as Cordell Walker, a role that was originally played by Chuck Norris in Walker, Texas Ranger. Walker is not a continuation of the 90s show. It is a reboot. In this case I think it works well. I never watched the original. I have seen parts of it. I do enjoy Walker. I think Walker is meant for a new audience. It is not trying to cater to the audience of the original. I think that is something that works in its favor.
Walker had a strong first season in the ratings. Currently, it’s doing alright. The ratings landscape has changed for the CW. Walker still ranks higher than other shows on the network. Walker will actually become one of the oldest shows for the CW if it gets renewed for another season. The oldest show on the network will be All American which will be entering season 6. The Flash is ending in May and Riverdale just started its final season. The Flash is in season 9 while Riverdale is in season 7.
There are a lot of stories left to tell. Walker, Texas Ranger lasted eight seasons. Walker could easily last just as long if not longer. Some of it would come down to if Jared Padalecki still wanted to stay on the show. He starred in Supernatural for fifteen seasons. He may not want to spend that much time on another show, or he might. That would be up to him. Walker is a fun show and has a lot of heart. A big part of the show is family. Walker has a great ensemble cast. It is also nice to have a modern western. Walker is also very unique for the CW. The only other western on the network is the prequel series Walker Independence. There are not many westerns on the main networks. Yellowstone airs on cable. Walker is one of two westerns on the main networks. I think Walker might have a slight edge over its spinoff in terms of getting renewed, but it does not have much of an edge. If The CW only keeps one, they may keep Walker because it’s more established than Walker Independence. Walker has had three seasons to build an audience. Walker deserves to get renewed for a season 4 and it should be able to go on for many more seasons.
