Save Rock and Roll came out on April 12th, 2013. It was a big deal at the time because it was the first album to officially end Fall Out Boy’s hiatus. They went on hiatus after their last album Folie a Deux was released in 2008. It was quite a comeback. My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light Em Up) was the lead single and was a smash hit. It dominated radio and landed in the top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100. They went on to have a second single Alone Together that did decently. Their last substantial hit to dominate the charts and radio was Thnks Fr Th Mmrs off their album Infinity on High.
Fall Out Boy made quite the comeback. The album Save Rock and Roll debuted at number 1 on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart. My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light Em Up) had longevity on the chart and radio. Save Rock and Roll was the first Fall Out Boy album I owned. I knew who they were and knew their hits songs including Dance, Dance which was a personal favorite. Their music also was featured prominently in the early seasons of One Tree Hill. The band itself appeared on the show as well as Pete Wentz who ended up in a fling with one of the main characters of the show. Save Rock and Roll had some interesting collaborations which include Just One Yesterday featuring Foxes, The Mighty Fall featuring Big Sean, Rat a Tat featuring Courtney Love, and the title track Save Rock and Roll featuring the legendary Elton John. The fact the album had collaborations was a surprise since the band was not known for having features on prior albums. I believe they had some but not many. However, none of the collaborations were singles. Really only people who owned the album would be aware of the features. Some were a surprise. I think the biggest surprise was Big Sean given it came out of left field. The Mighty Fall works well, and Big Sean does his thing. Courtney Love and Elton John were surprises, but I think they made a little more sense given the genre they are in. I was surprised that Courtney Love agreed to be on the album and Rat a Tat works well for her. Save Rock and Roll is a good song for Elton John. Elton John is a legend, and he is known for some unusual pairings including teaming up with Eminem at the Grammys many years before.
Save Rock and Roll has a lot of great tunes. It’s a solid album. It’s nice that Fall Out Boy was able to have a successful comeback and it lasted for awhile too. It is crazy to think this album is now turning 10. I remember when My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark first came out. I immediately liked the track. It is the reason I was interested in checking out the whole album. Once I did, I liked the album and bought it. The album had some controversy mostly due to Fall Out Boy’s evolving sound. This was and is still fairly common amongst many popular acts. Some complaints were about the fact the album did not sound like their earlier work which were also the same complaints for Linkin Park and Maroon 5. Pete Wentz and Patrick Stump stated they wanted Fall Out Boy to evolve and have a sound fit for the modern world and where the band was at the time. Regardless, it paid off and My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark is now part of Fall Out Boy’s legacy of hit songs.
