If The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a hit, which after its record breaking opening weekend already has made it one, this would potentially be the beginning of a Nintendo Cinematic Universe. Fans have been referring to it as the NCU.  Here is a list of potential movies. This is not just limited to Mario characters.

Luigi’s Mansion

There have been rumors suggesting that there are plans for Luigi’s Mansion to be a movie. I think it would be a fun movie that adds a horror vibe to the mix. It also would give Luigi the spotlight. Mario does not have to appear in the movie. They could reference him. This could really be Luigi’s moment.

Donkey Kong

This is also one where rumors have suggested there are plans for a movie centered on Donkey Kong as well as the Kong clan. I think it would be a fun movie and there is a lot they could do with the Kongs.

Yoshi

A Yoshi movie could explore Yoshi as well as Yoshi Island. It could cover the other places that the Yoshis live in. This could really be a shining vehicle for Yoshi. 

Star Fox

Most people will focus on the Mario aspect but if they want to do a full NCU, Star Fox would be a great project. Star Fox can be an epic sci-fi movie similar to Star Wars. Star Fox also has a colorful cast of characters. Inspiration could be taken from the second game Star Fox Adventures which veered away from the bulk of the games which were shooter games.

Legend of Zelda

There were talks of projects for Legend of Zelda over the years which never materialized including a live action Netflix series. Legend of Zelda would be a great addition to the NCU, adding fantasy to the mix.

Banjo Kazooie

Banjo Kazooie is underrated and is also a complicated game. I finally beat the game a few years back many years after it originally came out. A lot of these video games are actually better suited for adults given the complexities of them. This would make a great movie. I am aware that Banjo Kazooie is not a Nintendo property. It is most associated with Nintendo since the first two games were for Nintendo 64. This would mostly come down to a rights issue. Marvel and Sony are sharing Spider-Man, so anything is possible.

Super Smash Brothers

Fans have suggested Super Smash Brothers as the NCU’s Avengers movies. If the NCU were to do phases, each phase would culminate in a Super Smash Brothers movie. The Super Smash Brothers Movies could link everything together. The games already have Mario, Peach, Link, Zelda, Yoshi, Kirby, Star Fox, and many others. This could tie everything together especially since Star Fox and Legend of Zelda are different than the Mario games. Even Donkey Kong and Yoshi have been associated with Mario. Donkey Kong is in the Super Mario Bros Movie and Yoshi was in the Super Mario game. The main antagonist could be Bowser, or Wario, another villain altogether or it could follow the game and have Master Hand as the villain. The sky is truly the limit.
