Currently The CW has only renewed All American for a sixth season. Every other current show is awaiting a renewal. Walker, the show that Walker Independence is a prequel to also is awaiting a renewal. There are no safe bets with the CW since so much has changed since being acquired by NextStar.
I think Walker Independence should be renewed for a second season. It deserves another season. It was just getting started. Ratings wise, the show is not setting any records, but all of the CW shows are not performing that great. None of their shows can get a million viewers during live airings like they once did. Walker was able to get a million viewers during its first season. Walker Independence is on HBO Max now. I would think how it does on that will determine if it gets renewed. Netflix gave a boost to Riverdale and All American after their first seasons.
There are some available slots with The Flash and Riverdale ending this year. Nancy Drew, which is set to premiere in May will also be ending. There is some room to keep this. I think Walker Independence deserves more time to grow. It has a likeable cast of characters. The fact it’s a prequel does not limit it. I do watch Walker but honestly, I think anyone could enjoy this without having seen Walker. It is in a unique spot. The show is set in the 1800s whereas Walker is set in the present. There will never really be a true crossover unless they did one where both shows had flashbacks or flashforwards similar to shows like Lost and Once Upon a Time or Arrow which had Katharine McNamara who stars on Walker Independence. By being set in the 1800s any characters that are linked to the characters on Walker would be ancestors to those characters. Walker is a modern western whereas Walker Independence fits more into a classic western since it is set during a time when westerns were more of a thing.
Walker Independence ended on a cliffhanger and left a lot open for a second season. I think the show deserves to get a second season and to be able to show what it is capable of. There is a lot more left to do with the show. It should not be a one and done.
