Scream VI opened in March and is doing very well. Naturally, there is a question if there will be a Scream 7. Scream VI is one of the highest grossing movies in the franchise. It has already surpassed Scream 3, Scream 4, and Scream 5. It has a good chance of surpassing Scream and Scream 2 to become the highest grossing movie in the franchise. Scream VI was thought to be the final chapter in the Scream Franchise. For many years there was a plan for Scream 4, 5, and 6 but it was always made to sound that would be it. Scream 4 came out eleven years after Scream 3 and bombed. Eleven more years came before Scream aka Scream 5 came out and did much better. Scream VI even brought back Hayden Panettiere who was last seen in Scream 4. If things played out differently Neve Campbell, who starred in all prior films as Sydney Prescott would have been in this one too. Courtney Cox, who plays Gail Weathers, is the only one to appear in the entire franchise. Also, in Scream VI there were a lot of ties to the franchise as a whole. Usually, that type of thing is reserved for a final chapter.
As of this writing, there has not been an official announcement regarding a Scream 7. To some degree it seems inevitable there will be one. I also would not be surprised if the studio does not do one. We live in a world of cinematic universes and franchises that are ongoing. There is nothing wrong with that, but I do think some things should have an actual end. The basic plot of Scream can go on indefinitely. Also, the killer changes in every movie. It doesn’t matter if a prior Ghostface was killed off, because a new one would don the mask. Each film can have a different cast. It is not reliant on maintaining the same characters. Scream VI went on without Neve Campbell who was the star of the entire franchise. Marvel and DC can go on for many years even without its stars partly because they are based on comic books that have gone on for many years. Star Wars can go on for many years since it has built a vast world, especially with shows like The Mandalorian. They have a slew of Star Wars shows while the film side has remained mum for the moment. Three new films were announced during Star Wars Celebration. Concrete dates were not set. Fast and Furious is nearing its end after twenty plus years. Fast X is the penultimate chapter and Fast and Furious 11 will be the final chapter. There have been talks that once the main films end, they would branch into spinoffs. We’ll see if that happens once the series ends.
Should there be a Scream 7? Scream VI is a satisfying conclusion if it is the end of the franchise. It also is left open ended where it could continue. Also, even if it had a definitive ending there could still be another one since a new killer could emerge and terrorize a whole new group of people. I enjoy the Scream movies. Scream is currently the only horror franchise where I have seen all the movies. If there is a Scream 7, I wouldn’t object to it, and I would see it. However, it would be nice for once to have a franchise come to a real conclusion. I think Scream VI is a great finale. Honestly, it seems the films have improved over time, especially the last two. It has become increasingly rare for things to get real endings. Films keep going with multiple sequels and spinoffs. Top Gun came out over thirty years ago and finally had a sequel. Since Top Gun: Maverick was a huge success there is talk of a third one. There is one more Indiana Jones movie with Harrison Ford which is coming out this summer, fifteen years after the fourth film. Even time is not a factor. I do believe Indiana Jones 5 will actually be the final movie unless it becomes a huge hit, and they manage to convince Harrison Ford to do a sixth and final chapter.
I think there shouldn’t be a Scream 7. I think Scream VI is a fitting conclusion to a horror franchise that has lasted for twenty seven years. Scream changed the game within the horror genre and has a legacy that will last for many years. Scream is up there with Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, and many others. If there is a Scream 7, I will see the movie. I will see a Scream 8, 9, 10, etc. I just think it would be nice to let Scream VI be the end. Also, if it is the end the franchise goes out on a high note and that is very rare for long running franchises.
