Currently there are rumors that The Resident is in danger of not getting renewed for season 7. It wrapped up its shortened season in January. The Resident has been a consistent performer for FOX through its entire run. The Resident is one of the few reliable dramas on the network. Most of the network is comprised of their Animation Domination roster and reality competition shows. The only other dramas that also perform fairly well are 9-1-1 and 9-1-1: Lonestar. The Resident was never a huge hit especially when compared to other medical shows like ER, Grey’s Anatomy, House etc. It was always a consistent performer, and it has lasted a lot longer than many other shows especially now a days. The Resident started out as a midseason show. A lot of midseason shows do not make it this far. For every Dawson’s Creek or Grey’s Anatomy there are plenty of shows that do not make it beyond one or two seasons. This past season celebrated its 100th episode, another rarity these days. The Resident has also maintained most of its cast. That is another rarity these days. Look at Grey’s Anatomy. Most of the cast that started out on the show is gone except for two. Even the main character that the show is named after left recently too. There have been a few cast shakeups but not much. Shaunette Renee Wilson and Emily VanCamp, two original cast members left. The door is always open for them to reprise their roles. One of the characters left the country while the other one was killed off. One could visit while the other could show up in flashbacks which has already happened.
I think The Resident has a lot of life left in it. At the very least The Resident should be renewed for a seventh season and if FOX wants to get rid of it, they could make it the final season. It was said that the season 6 finale could serve as a series finale if it had to. The hope is to keep it going. I think The Resident deserves to keep going. What makes the show, is the characters. The Resident is not the most unique hospital show. The Resident has likeable characters and the show is more than just a hospital show. It is about the doctors and their relationships. It is on the grittier side which is in line with a lot of the shows on FOX. It should at least get a seventh season but as long as the cast wants to keep doing it, I think it could go on for a season 8 and maybe even a 9 and 10.
