A Look at Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania Current Box Office

For the record, Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania is a hit. However, within its three weeks of release it has eroded more than 60% each week after its ginormous opening weekend. If blockbuster movies open huge they usually have a big second week drop but this dropped 69% its second week, followed by a 59% drop its third weekend in release. The final numbers were short of 60% but it still had a huge drop. It has already beaten the first Ant-Man which made 180 million domestically. It has already beaten a handful of Marvel films already. Its current total is 187 million domestically. This is the box office period of March 3-5th. Worldwide it currently sits at 420 million. It is lower than both prior Ant-Man films. Ant-Man was 519 million and Ant-Man & the Wasp was 622 million worldwide. Domestically Ant-Man & the Wasp was 216 million. There is still a chance Quantumania could beat the second film domestically. Worldwide, might be a bit of a stretch but anything is possible.

Where will Quantumania fall in the grand scheme of things? Realistically it will probably be able to hit 200 million, but it will struggle to at least match, if not surpass Ant-Man & the Wasp. March just started but it already has a heavy hitter in Creed III which also is well received by audiences. The competition will only get fierce as the month progresses. Scream VI opens this upcoming weekend. The following weekend sees Shazam! Fury of the Gods. Later in March will be the releases of John Wick: Chapter 4 and Dungeon and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. There is the chance these films could all bomb, but I think they will at least have strong openings given the anticipation level for reach of them. Creed III will probably do very well, even if the other movies fail, Creed III would more than pick up the slack.

I don’t really know why Quantumania is eroding so much. It seems that the bulk of the audience went to see it opening weekend. That is not uncommon for most Marvel movies or big blockbusters. A lot of Marvel movies will get repeat viewers. I am not sure how many people are seeing Quantumania more than once. I know there were people who saw Avatar: The Way of Water more than once which seemed to help its numbers. What does this mean for the other two Marvel movies coming out this year? I think regardless how Quantumania plays out, it won’t affect upcoming releases. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is highly anticipated and is the conclusion of James Gunn’s trilogy. Unless the movie is hated, it should wind up being one of the biggest Marvel movies to date. I think despite the backlash against Brie Larson, The Marvels will be able to do very well especially if the movie ends being better liked than the first movie. It also has the added bonus of including Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and Iman Vellani as Ms. Marvel. That may help attract fans of those characters.

There is still hope that Quantumania could stabilize. Even if it continues to erode at high percentages it will at the very least be able to hit 200 million domestically. It is currently only 13 million away. It has already surpassed several Marvel movies, it is not the lowest. That still belongs to The Incredible Hulk which earned 134 million domestically in 2008. Marvel has an interest in doing an Ant-Man 4, so where this one falls won’t really affect the character’s future. I think it is safe to presume that Ant-Man will be involved in Avengers 5 & 6. I also think this is not a reflection of Phase 5 as a whole. I think the upcoming films have the potential to be hugely successful and game changing to the MCU.
