TikTok launched in 2016 and is a video app that has short-form videos on any topic. It has blown up substantially and has become a powerhouse in the music industry. Half of the current hits of today have blown up because of TikTok. Dove Cameron’s smash hit song Boyfriend went viral on her TikTok channel marking her first big hit. Olivia Rodrigo’s breakout number 1 smash Driver’s License started out on TikTok before taking the world by storm.
TikTok has not only blown-up new releases, but it has given a second life to older songs. Within the past year, Lady Gaga’s song Bloody Marry, The Weekend’s song Die For You, Sia’s song Unstoppable, and Miguel’s song Sure Thing all have gotten a second life. Let’s not forget the second life of Dreams by Fleetwood Mac that happened a few years back. The song re-entered the Billboard Hot 100. Regardless of what personal opinions are of Tik Tok, no one can argue that it is a very powerful tool when it comes to music. Most current hits are coming out of TikTok. Look at the impact it is having on older songs. Bloody Mary by Lady Gaga is currently on the Billboard Hot 100 and is getting radio airplay. It blew up because it was used in TikTok videos for many fans doing their own version of the Wednesday Addams dance in the hit Netflix series Wednesday. It got Lady Gaga’s seal of approval. Bloody Mary is interesting for a few reasons. This is off Lady Gag’s third album Born This Way which came out in 2011. Also, Bloody Mary was never a single off the album. It is a deep cut. This now means Born This Way has six hit songs off it. It will be interesting to see how far Bloody Mary goes.
The Weeknd Die For You is on a similar journey. Die For You is off The Weeknd’s album Starboy which came out in 2016. Die For You is currently in the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100 and is being played on radio.
Sia Unstoppable and Miguel Sure Thing have found second lives on the Billboard Hot 100. Lady Gaga Bloody Mary is the only song out of this group that had never charted previously. Miguel Sure thing has been rising on the chart while Sia Unstoppable has been remaining steady.
TikTok is not going anywhere and has breathed new life into older songs. What could the next hit be? Could other deep cuts from Lady Gaga gain a new life? What about Miguel, Sia, or The Weeknd? The Weeknd is finding more success with Die for You than his recent music from his last album Dawn FM. Maybe ten years from a now a deep cut from Dawn FM will find a new life or maybe his single Sacrifice will get a second life? There is a chance for any song by any artist to get a new life. Maybe the next one will come from Britney Spears or P!nk or Drake? Maybe there will be a resurgence from Nickelback or Fall Out Boy or Jessica Simpson? Anything is possible. I never thought Lady Gaga Bloody Mary would become a hit and I love the song. I liked the song when I bought the album years ago. I also didn’t think Sia Unstoppable or The Weeknd Die For You would find this type of success now. I figured once their album cycles were up that was it. It is nice to see that anything is possible and never say never.
