The Super Bowl Halftime Show has had many great headliners over the years including Rihanna who just performed. Who should be next? There are many different directions they could go in. Who hasn’t done it yet? Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Katy Perry, The Black Eyed Peas, Maroon 5, Bruno Mars, Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, Bruce Springsteen, Justin Timberlake and many others have headlined. Here are some artists who should headline next or at some point down the line.
Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift is one of the biggest stars in the world. They have finally gotten Rihanna and Beyonce performed a decade ago. Taylor Swift has a huge catalogue of hit music. She has been around for almost twenty years. She has great showmanship, and she knows how to put on a show. She has crossed genres. She launched as a country artist and then moved into pop. Her albums Folklore and Evermore fell under alternative and now her recent album Midnights is back to pop. She has worked with a range of artists from Ed Sheeran to Future. She also has universal appeal, and she has a wide range of fans.
Missy Elliott
If the Super Bowl wants to go a HipHop route, they could look to Missy Elliott who has already performed at the Super Bowl as a special guest during Katy Perry’s Halftime Show. Missy Elliott’s performance gave a boost to her songs that she performed which included Lose Control, Work It, and Get Ur Freak On. Missy Elliott is a legend and she could be able to put on quite the show if she were to headline. Also, new music has been teased for a long time. She did put an EP out a few years back. The Halftime Show could be the thing that pushes Missy Elliott to finally release her 7th album. Also, she has collaborated with so many artists over the years, she would have a slew of potential guests to bring along for the ride.
Janet Jackson
Janet Jackson has never headlined the Halftime Show. The last time she was there was the infamous Nipple Gate with Justin Timberlake back in 2004. Justin Timberlake went on to headline the Halftime Show. I think it’s time for Janet Jackson to do the same. She has new music on the way as well that has been teased for a while. This would be the perfect platform for both redemption as well as using it to promote her new music. For some reason Janet Jackson got all the blame during the incident while Justin Timberlake seemed to go unscathed for the most part. I think Janet Jackson should be given the opportunity to headline the Halftime Show and she will be able to put on quite a show. Her brother Michael Jackson headlined many years ago. It is a bit of a surprise that Janet Jackson has not headlined the Halftime Show yet. Maybe there were plans to ask her if the incident never happened. Now is the chance to get another legend.
Selena Gomez
Selena Gomez is a big star. She has been in the music industry for about 15 years now. I know there will be people who feel Selena Gomez should not be on the list because she is not the strongest singer. Selena can sing but she is not Adele or Beyonce. Taylor Swift is not the strongest vocalist either, but a lot of people would like to see her perform at the Halftime Show. Not that I recommend it, but Selena could always lip-synch her performance if need be. Not every Halftime Show performer sang completely live. I believe Madonna lip-synched portions of her performance as well as Michael Jackson and they were two of the biggest stars. Selena has been more successful in music than on the acting side. Selena has more music than she does movies currently. Although she has gotten a boost with her hit show Only Murders in the Building on Hulu, and I believe she has some movies coming out in the future. Selena has a ton of hit songs and she has a new album coming out this year. The Halftime Show could be the perfect place for Selena to prove herself as a pop star as well as gain new fans. Selena’s music has evolved overtime. Her first number one was the vulnerable ballad Lose You to Love Me which she could perform at the Halftime Show. She also has a fair amount of upbeat dance songs. She even released a whole dance album, the appropriately titled Stars Dance which included the hit songs Come and Get It and Slow Down. She has a decent amount of collaborations also. There is the potential for her to bring guests with her including ASAP Rocky who was on Good for You with her or Kid Cudi who was on A Sweeter Place, a deep cut of her album Rare. She also was featured on the hit songs Calm Down by Rema, We Don’t Talk Anymore by Charlie Puth, It Ain’t Me by Kygo and many more. This would be a good platform to promote her album.
Miley Cyrus
I know a concern from some people will be if Miley Cyrus is appropriate for the Halftime Show. Madonna performed and she was fine. Rihanna just performed and there were concerns in the past by some if she would be appropriate partly due to her catalogue of music. Miley Cyrus is more than just antics and she can put on a show. I think Miley would be able to be her but also be fairly appropriate. She has come along way since her Wrecking Ball days. Like Selena, Miley has been in the music industry for about 15 years or more. Miley could perform her older songs as well as more current ones. Party in the U.S.A. is still very popular and Miley could perform that as well as other oldies but goodies like See You Again or The Climb. Miley’s music has covered many genres from pop, to country, and rock. She also has a new album coming out this year and this platform would be a good boost for it and whatever single she would be on by that point. At the very least she could perform her new hit song Flowers.
Ariana Grande
Ariana Grande may not be able to headline next year but she should headline the Halftime Show at some point. There is not necessarily a rule that the Halftime Show performer has to have new music in order to perform. It would come down to if Ariana Grande is available to do it regardless of her having new music. Ariana is busy filming the two-part Wicked movies based off the popular Broadway musical. She has stated that all her focus will be on that and new music would not happen until afterward. Realistically we are at least another year or more out until Ariana puts out her 7th album. With that said, she has 6 albums and a ton of hits that she can choose from. She also has worked with a lot of artists including Nicki Minaj, The Weeknd, Doja Cat, Future, Zedd, and many others. She could bring out any of them or other artists. This would also mark Ariana’s first live performance in a few years. This could help satisfy fans until Ariana gets back in the studio.
Harry Styles
Harry Styles has proven himself as a pop star. He is riding high off his massive album Harry’s House. Harry Styles has enough songs from his solo career to headline the Halftime Show. Given the Halftime Show is 12-13 minutes long, Harry could be able to fit all his solo hits in the set including Adore You, As It Was, Sign of the Times, Late Night Talking, and more. He could also use it to reunite him with Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, and possibly Zayne Malik for a One Direction reunion similar to what Beyonce did with Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams for a Destiney’s Child reunion.
Britney Spears
It is a surprise why Britney Spears has not headlined the Halftime Show. Personally, I don’t know if Britney would want to do it at this point given everything that has happened. Britney has found success recently with Hold Me Closer an Elton John track that featured her. It was her first new music she recorded since her last album Glory which was released in 2016. Britney has tons of hits, and she can put on a show. If she were to do the Halftime Show she could go one of two ways. She could lip-synch it and focus heavily on the dancing, or she could both dance and use the platform to showcase her vocals and prove to everyone that she can actually sing. A big bonus would be that this would completely be Britney’s creation now that the conservatorship has been removed. Britney would be able to do whatever she wants from choosing the costumes to the setlist and possible guests. She does have tracks with Madonna and Pharrell Williams.
Pitbull
Pitbull has a ton of hits, and he could have a star studded Halftime Show. Most of Pitbull’s hit songs are collaborations. He could perform Give Me Everything and Time of Our Lives with Ne-Yo. Other artists who could make an appearance are T-Pain, Usher, Chris Brown, Enrique Iglesias, Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, Jason Derulo, Flo Rida, Kesha, Christina Aguilera, and many many more. Pitbull would definitely be bringing club vibes to the Halftime Show.
Flo Rida
Like Pitbull, Flo Rida also has a ton of hits and has worked with a lot of artists. Flo Rida could also have a club filled Halftime Show and a star studded one. He could use the opportunity to perform Right Round with Kesha which would be the first time they would perform the track together. Other artists he could bring out could include David Guetta, Sia, Chris Brown, Robin Thicke, Sage the Gemini, Nelly Furtado, Ne-Yo, Akon, and many more.
Carrie Underwood
If the Halftime Show wants to go a country route, Carrie Underwood would be a good choice. She has been a Country Superstar for almost 20 years. She has dozens of hits, and she could bring out some other country artists. It would be cool if she used the opportunity to perform Before He Cheats and combine it with Gabby Barrett’s song, I Hope which has similar themes not to mention that Gabby Barrett is a big fan of Carrie Underwood.
