Just Wright was released in 2010. The film is about physical therapist, Leslie Wright who meets Scott McKnight, one of the players on her favorite basketball team, the Nets. Scott gets injured on the court and Leslie helps him recover and starts to develop feelings for him. The film stars Queen Latifah, Common, Paula Patton, James Pickens Jr., Phylicia Rashad, Pam Grier, Laz Alonso, Mehcad Brooks, and Michael Landes.
I thought Just Wright was alright. In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, I am on a romantic comedy/drama kick. There will be some more reviews of films in the romance genre over the next few days. I like Queen Latifah a lot. I loved her in Chicago. I have seen her in other things as well. She did a good job and Common also did a good job. The movie itself felt a little bland. The romance genre can be tricky. A lot of films can be predictable. There are some that are truly unique and a breath of fresh air. Even projects that are predictable can still be fun and comforting. That is why Hallmark does so well with their movies. They offer comfort food and the safeness of knowing how everything will play out. Just Wright lacked fun and to be honest it seemed to lack a bit of a pulse.
The cast does a good job; however, the movie relies on Queen Latifah and Common. They are the stars but the movie seemed to really rely on them. Most romantic comedies rely on the love story the audience is supposed to get invested in. Hallmark does the same thing. In a lot of other movies, the supporting characters help lift the films in one way or another. At times it felt like there was no supporting cast.
Spoiler Alert
Paula Patton plays Morgan who is Leslie’s best friend. She starts dating Scott and they quickly get engaged. Morgan calls off the engagement. She shows up again near the end. Even when she shows back up again, she is not seen that much. I guess she had decent screentime, however it just felt like she wasn’t there that much. It felt the same for a lot of the other characters. The movie itself has a good cast. I am slightly surprised that they were not a little more involved. The only thing I could think of is some of the actors may not have been available. James Pickens Jr. who plays Leslie’s father is on Grey’s Anatomy. Depending when this movie filmed, it could have conflicted with Grey’s Anatomy’s shooting schedule. He is the only one I can think of. I cannot think of other projects that could have overlapped with this in regards to the rest of the cast.
Just Wright is another romantic movie that is just okay. It felt bleh. I did not feel a spark with this one. I did not feel connected to the characters. I just did not feel anything at all with this movie even when everything worked out in the end.
